In 1969, the Starr family purchased well-established vineyards on Oliver’s Road McLaren Vale, then in 1971 they founded “Merrivale Wines”. Throughout the 1970's, the vineyards were gradually developed and improved with Jack Starr becoming renowned for his red and fortified wines.
In the 80's “Krondorf” Winery (Grant Burge & Ian Wilson) of the Barossa Valley purchased “Merrivale Wines” but kept it trading as a separate entity to Krondorf. Charles Hargrave was appointed head Winemaker during the 80’s and two new varieties, Chardonnay (sourced from Willunga) and Riesling from the property's own vineyards, were introduced to the growing portfolio of wines. Their first vintage was processed at Krondorf Wines while the Merrivale "hollow tin shed" was being equipped for future vintages.
“Merrivale Wines” was rapidly gaining widespread recognition, when it was acquired by Brian and Kay Light in the 90's. They set about revitalising the old Oliver’s Road vineyard, planting 2 hectares of Chardonnay and 3 hectares of Shiraz during 1994 and 1995. This was followed closely by the purchase of a second vineyard at Bakers Gully, situated just south of Clarendon high in the hills above McLaren Vale. It was at this time the Tapestry label was also introduced, however it remained as a sister label to the “Merrivale” brand.
In 1997 the prominent South Australian company Gerard Industries purchased Merrivale Wines under the charter of Robert Gerard AO, and the now famous vineyards became part of the Chapel Hill Winery (then owned by Gerard Industries) The Chapel Hill winery was sold by the Gerard family in 2000; however they retained the ownership of the Merrivale Winery and Vineyards along with the Tapestry label. Moving forward all wines were bottled under the "Tapestry" brand.
Tapestry is under the charter of Robert Gerard AO, the owner of these renowned vineyards and the Tapestry label. Tapestry, a relatively small boutique label has gained widespread recognition both within Australia and Overseas, successfully establishing a national distribution network and export markets in Canada, China, India, Hong Kong and Singapore.
